There are breast cancer risk factors we can control

There are several factors associated with an increased risk of getting breast cancer – some which can be controlled and some which cannot – and some women will get breast cancer even without presenting any apparent risk factors.  Here are some risk factors that are under our control:
 – Being overweight: Particularly after menopause this is a risk because body fat becomes our main source of oestrogen after the ovaries stop producing this hormone, and Oestrogen is known to fuel certain cancers.
– Diet:  Linked to weight, eating healthily will keep your BMI in a healthy range.
– Exercise:  There is a growing body of evidence that regular exercise can lower one’s breast cancer risk.
– Excessive alcohol consumption:  Alcohol can limit your liver’s ability to control blood levels of oestrogen, which increases breast cancer risk levels.

How many of us actively practice replenishing ourselves?

Wisdom says you cannot pour from an empty cup. How full is your cup right now? Maybe you have been telling yourself that you’re okay, because you’re so used to being busy, productive and continually on the edge of exhaustion that it’s your ‘normal’. We have great news!  It’s alright, and absolutely essential, to take time out for yourself – to relax, refresh and regroup even if you are busy. Start by taking 15 minutes each day just for you – here are five ideas to get you started:
·        Take a short walk
·        Mediate – sit quietly and relax your mind
·        Write down what is bothering you
·        Shoot the breeze  a good friend
·        Turn up the music and dance
Why not book a 30-minute Origin Express facial – it’s the perfect pick me up for all skin types?

Sip your stress away

If you’re looking for a simple way to unwind from your stress-filled life drink a glass of water – because all of our organs, including our brains, need plenty of water to function properly, and if we are even a little bit dehydrated our bodies will not function properly.  Being dehydrated raises the levels of the stress hormone, cortisol, and the stress that this brings on can have the same horrible symptoms as dehydration:  an increased heart rate, nausea, fatigue and headache.
Here are five tips to help you de-stress by drinking more water:
·        Drink a glass of water after every bathroom break
·        Every time you drain your glass or water bottle fill it up
·        Get into drinking herbal tea
·        Stick to a one-for-one rule when drinking alcohol
·        Use an app to track your water consumption

Breast cancer can be beaten – especially if it’s caught early

Statistics show that for South African women breast cancer is the most prevalent of cancers, across the board.  Early detection can make a world of difference: this includes doing monthly breast self-exams and scheduling regular mammograms.  It is encouraging to know that when breast cancer is detected early, and is localised, the 5-year relative survival rate is 100%.
Did you know that men can get breast cancer, too, although it is relatively rare? Breast cancer in men is usually presents as a hard lump underneath the nipple (or areola). Men carry a higher mortality rate than women do, mainly because awareness among men is lower and they are less likely to assume a lump is breast cancer. Unfortunately, this can cause a delay in them seeking treatment.

Massage can help your health and wellbeing

When one’s body is tense and under stress it produces unhealthy levels of the stress hormone, cortisol, bringing unwelcome physical problems, such as weight gain, sleeplessness and headaches. Massage therapy has been shown to decrease cortisol levels in the body. This enables the body to enter ‘recovery mode’.  Just a few of the well-established benefits of massage therapy include:
·        Physical relaxation
·        Reduced anxiety and lower stress levels
·        Better sleep patterns
·        Enhanced energy and vitality
·        Improved circulation
·        Relief for tight muscles

When you are stressed, practice relaxation

When we are under pressure our bodies produce hormones that put us into fight or flight – or even “frozen” mode.  And it does not take much to feel the ill-effects of stress, because our bodies can’t tell the difference between the distress brought on by being charged by an angry elephant or being stuck in traffic, late for a meeting. Here are five calming techniques you can use to relax when stress bites:
– Breathe deeply – taking just a few deep breaths can help to reduce tension and stress
– Visualise a peaceful scene – close your eyes for a minute and take yourself to a place that makes you happy
– Practice progressive muscle relaxation – starting at your toes and ending with you scalp, tense and relax each muscle in turn
– Put on some music – any music that you love will flood your brain with feel-good neurochemicals
– Watch a viral video – because having a good laugh is an awesome relaxation tool, bringing oxygen-rich air into your lungs and releasing feel-good endorphins in the brain.
