Give your best friend the gift of happiness this festive season

Did you know that among the many benefits of enjoying a spa treatment is the biological effect it has on your body in relation to your happiness levels?  A professional massage is known to release serotonin, which is the hormone associated with happiness that helps to improve your mood. This doesn’t make you happy immediately after your massage, but can continue to boost your mood in the days that follow, too.  So, share the happiness and treat your best friend to a massage treatment at Origin Spa.

Origin Spa’s Healthy Gift Guide #1

This festive season, consider adopting a health theme for your gift shopping.   Every step counts – especially during the summer holidays when we eat and drink more than normal. So, why not give your besties a pedometer and give them an incentive to stay active throughout the day. A pedometer is the perfect motivational tool to get your friends off the couch – to put down the TV remote or smartphone and get walking and having fun in the beautiful outdoors.

Give your family the gift of peace this festive season

One of the immediate benefits of having a professional massage is a feeling of deep relaxation and calm. This occurs because massage prompts the release of endorphins – the brain chemicals that produce feelings of wellbeing – while levels of stress hormones, such as adrenalin and cortisol are reduced.  So, share some peace and tranquillity – give your favourite family members a massage at Origin Wellness Spa this festive season.

Origin Spa’s Healthy Gift Guide #2

This festive season, consider adopting a health theme for your gift shopping.  It’s no coincidence that boxers, who are some of the fittest athletes around, regularly skip to help with their cardiovascular fitness and eye-hand coordination.  Why not give your friends and family skipping ropes this festive season and motivate them to jump-start a regular skipping routine for increased fitness?

Give your friends the gift of love this festive season

Spa treatments are a luxury that many of us love to indulge in – be it a relaxing massage after a stressful time, or treating yourself to a facial before a big event.  So ‘share the love’ and treat your family or a good friend to a treatment of their choice at Origin Wellness Spa over the festive season – it will be their favourite gift this year.

Origin Spa’s Healthy Gift Guide #3

This festive season, consider adopting a health theme for your gift shopping. There are many good therapeutic reasons why adult colouring books are all the rage these days.  Colouring exercises the whole brain – employing the creative side of the brain when picking colours and using the frontal lobe for concentration and organisation.  Giving your friends a colouring book will encourage them to take “time out” from the stress and concerns of everyday life.

Time to give yourself the gift of some ‘me time’

Preparing your body for summer

Preparing your body for summer

Treat your feet to some much needed TLC

Many people disregard the importance of foot care, in spite of the endless stress and pressure we put our feet through. Offering the same nail and skin benefits as manicures, pedicures are actually believed by professionals to be even more important. Regular pedicures not only help keep feet looking pretty, they also keep nails trimmed, calluses controlled and skin hydrated. In addition, a foot massage helps to relieve tension and stimulate blood and lymph circulation.

Prepare your skin for summer

Summer is here bringing with it a desire to shed our layers and head out into the sunshine. Now is the time to resume a warmer weather beauty routine to lay the foundation for glowing summer skin.  First things first – a thorough deep cleanse is essential in keeping your skin looking radiant and healthy. This has the added benefit of helping anti-aging products and treatments work as they should.  A professional deep cleansing facial reaches the underlying parts of your skin that your everyday facial wash cannot reach, and it will remove excess oil, toxins and dead skin cells, leaving your skin looking fresh and youthful.

Summer is a time for skin renewal and rejuvenation

Exfoliating your skin doesn’t only do away with dead skin cells to reveal more youthful-looking skin, it can also improve the effectiveness of your regular skincare routine. What’s more, regular exfoliation increases the skin’s radiance and clarity by unclogging pores, evening out skin tone, boosting circulation, increasing cell turnover, and stimulating collagen synthesis.  Whether you have dry, normal, oily or sensitive skin, exfoliation can bring new life to your complexion.

Hydrate your skin from inside and out

It is only natural that as the weather becomes warmer, our bodies need more water, and the same applies to our skin. Many people report that by increasing their water intake they experience fewer breakouts and their skin takes on a more radiant glow.  To sustain your skin’s natural moisture a hydrating facial is loaded with many moisture-retaining benefits. The products that we use for a hydrating facial have properties that bind moisture and lock it inside deeper layers of the skin, preventing moisture loss. As a result skin looks softer and smoother – and the appearance of wrinkles is decreased.

It’s so easy to book your next treatment online

We invite you to put our online treatment booking system to the test.  Visit our website at www.originwellness.co.za,  then select and click on the treatment of your choice – and you’re booked.  It’s really that simple – the rest is up to our wonderful team who love making every client look and feel great. We look forward to seeing you soon!

Head out into summer with confidence

When it comes to putting on your favourite summer dress and heading out into the world with confidence, getting a body wax isn’t just about getting rid of unwanted hair, it’s also about creating smooth, beautiful skin.  Light exfoliation before hair removal is essential for waxing to work at its best. This this will gently rid the skin of dead cells and improve the texture of dry skin, preparing it for waxing. Having regular waxing treatments also provides an exfoliating effect that can help to improve your skin texture and softness. The final step to smooth, beautiful skin is to moisturise every day after your wax to keep the skin soft and supple, and help new hairs to grow through normally.

Say goodbye to dry elbows and knees, naturally

No-one wants to spoil the look of their favourite summer dress with unsightly dry elbows and knees. A natural fix is to combine lemon juice and baking soda until it forms a thick paste then scrub your elbows and knees with the paste to remove any build up of dry, dead skin.  Rinse thoroughly with cold water and moisturise elbows and knees by massaging in coconut oil. Leave the oil on for 30 minutes before wiping off any excess.  Repeat this process twice a week until you are happy with the result.

Breast Cancer Awareness

Breast Cancer Awareness

There are breast cancer risk factors we can control

There are several factors associated with an increased risk of getting breast cancer – some which can be controlled and some which cannot – and some women will get breast cancer even without presenting any apparent risk factors.  Here are some risk factors that are under our control:
 – Being overweight: Particularly after menopause this is a risk because body fat becomes our main source of oestrogen after the ovaries stop producing this hormone, and Oestrogen is known to fuel certain cancers.
– Diet:  Linked to weight, eating healthily will keep your BMI in a healthy range.
– Exercise:  There is a growing body of evidence that regular exercise can lower one’s breast cancer risk.
– Excessive alcohol consumption:  Alcohol can limit your liver’s ability to control blood levels of oestrogen, which increases breast cancer risk levels.

How many of us actively practice replenishing ourselves?

Wisdom says you cannot pour from an empty cup. How full is your cup right now? Maybe you have been telling yourself that you’re okay, because you’re so used to being busy, productive and continually on the edge of exhaustion that it’s your ‘normal’. We have great news!  It’s alright, and absolutely essential, to take time out for yourself – to relax, refresh and regroup even if you are busy. Start by taking 15 minutes each day just for you – here are five ideas to get you started:
·        Take a short walk
·        Mediate – sit quietly and relax your mind
·        Write down what is bothering you
·        Shoot the breeze  a good friend
·        Turn up the music and dance

Why not book a 30-minute Origin Express facial – it’s the perfect pick me up for all skin types?

Sip your stress away

If you’re looking for a simple way to unwind from your stress-filled life drink a glass of water – because all of our organs, including our brains, need plenty of water to function properly, and if we are even a little bit dehydrated our bodies will not function properly.  Being dehydrated raises the levels of the stress hormone, cortisol, and the stress that this brings on can have the same horrible symptoms as dehydration:  an increased heart rate, nausea, fatigue and headache.
Here are five tips to help you de-stress by drinking more water:
·        Drink a glass of water after every bathroom break
·        Every time you drain your glass or water bottle fill it up
·        Get into drinking herbal tea
·        Stick to a one-for-one rule when drinking alcohol
·        Use an app to track your water consumption

Breast cancer can be beaten – especially if it’s caught early

Statistics show that for South African women breast cancer is the most prevalent of cancers, across the board.  Early detection can make a world of difference: this includes doing monthly breast self-exams and scheduling regular mammograms.  It is encouraging to know that when breast cancer is detected early, and is localised, the 5-year relative survival rate is 100%.

Did you know that men can get breast cancer, too, although it is relatively rare? Breast cancer in men is usually presents as a hard lump underneath the nipple (or areola). Men carry a higher mortality rate than women do, mainly because awareness among men is lower and they are less likely to assume a lump is breast cancer. Unfortunately, this can cause a delay in them seeking treatment.

Friendships enrich your life and improve your health

Did you know there is a connection between good health and friendships? Friends boost your happiness and reduce your stress. They:
·        increase your sense of belonging and purpose;
·        improve your self-confidence and self-worth;
·        help you cope with traumas, such as divorce or a job loss; and
·        they encourage you to change or avoid unhealthy lifestyle habits.
It’s important to nurture your friendships. Letting friends know you care about them and appreciate them will help strengthen your bond. A great way to spend quality time with a good friend is to treat yourselves to a relaxing morning at Origin Spa followed by a delicious, healthy lunch.

Treat yourselves by booking a Spa Manicure and 60-minute Honeybush Hydrating & Rejuvenating Facial.

Massage can help your health and wellbeing

When one’s body is tense and under stress it produces unhealthy levels of the stress hormone, cortisol, bringing unwelcome physical problems, such as weight gain, sleeplessness and headaches. Massage therapy has been shown to decrease cortisol levels in the body. This enables the body to enter ‘recovery mode’.  Just a few of the well-established benefits of massage therapy include:
·        Physical relaxation
·        Reduced anxiety and lower stress levels
·        Better sleep patterns
·        Enhanced energy and vitality
·        Improved circulation
·        Relief for tight muscles

Book a relaxing 60-minute Swedish Massage to work away tension and relieve stress.

When you are stressed, practice relaxation

When we are under pressure our bodies produce hormones that put us into fight or flight – or even “frozen” mode.  And it does not take much to feel the ill-effects of stress, because our bodies can’t tell the difference between the distress brought on by being charged by an angry elephant or being stuck in traffic, late for a meeting. Here are five calming techniques you can use to relax when stress bites:
– Breathe deeply – taking just a few deep breaths can help to reduce tension and stress
– Visualise a peaceful scene – close your eyes for a minute and take yourself to a place that makes you happy
– Practice progressive muscle relaxation – starting at your toes and ending with you scalp, tense and relax each muscle in turn
– Put on some music – any music that you love will flood your brain with feel-good neurochemicals
– Watch a viral video – because having a good laugh is an awesome relaxation tool, bringing oxygen-rich air into your lungs and releasing feel-good endorphins in the brain.

Book a 60-minute Hot Stone Massage to promote relaxation and alleviate stress.
Hands & Feet

Hands & Feet

Beautiful hands deserve beautiful nails

In the same way that you should moisturise your face twice a day, it’s important to keep your hands hydrated. Without enough moisture, you will quickly suffer from dry skin and ragged cuticles. Stock up on small tubes of your favourite hand cream with a sun protection factor – keep one in your handbag, one in your car, one on your desk, and put one on your bedside table so that you can moisturise your hands and nails wherever you are. Apply hand cream onto damp skin, right after you wash your hands, to help lock in hydration.

Healthy nails are beautiful nails

Healthy fingernails are smooth, without pits or grooves. They’re uniform in colour and free of spots or discolouration. During any manicure or pedicure you receive a relaxing massage of the hands or feet which helps to improve blood circulation and improves mobility for the joints. With regular manicures and pedicures, the chances of your nails developing fungi and other infections are reduced. If you’re concerned about the health of your nails, consult a dermatologist.

Signs of Healthy Nails:
v Nail plates are an even flesh tone
v Cuticles are intact – never cut them
v Your nails are uniform in shape
v A prominent half-moon shaped white section is visible at nail base

Your hands need not be a tell-tale sign of your age

In the same way that the rest of your body benefits from regular exfoliation, the skin your hands will benefit from the same treatment. Sloughing off the top layer of skin on your hands will reveal younger looking skin underneath.  Once or twice a week, use a sugar scrub – made with one teaspoon of sugar combined with coconut oil – to give your hands a quick and light exfoliation. This will keep them smooth and soft – and help to eliminate brown age spots. The key is to exfoliate on a regular basis. Make sure to treat yourself to a regular manicure – nothing finishes off beautiful hands better than professionally polished nails.

Five good reasons to have a regular pedicure

Here are five benefits to having a regular pedicure that will make you want to keep your feet happy and gorgeous-looking all year round:
v Removes calluses and cracked dry skin on your feet
v  Exfoliation promotes healthier skin
v  Improves circulation
v  Early detection of nail ailments or fungus
v Makes your feet and toes aesthetically pleasing

Five ways to treat your feet the way you treat your face

1.      Kick off by soaking your feet for 5 to10 minutes in warm water and Epsom salts, which helps eliminate toxins in the body.
2.      Cleanse your feet from top to bottom and make sure to scrub between your toes and clean underneath your nails.
3.      Massage your feet frequently – a good rubdown will bring oxygen and nutrients to your tissues and remove waste.
4.      Moisturise each night, paying special attention to the heels. For nails and cuticles use olive oil or almond oil for hydration.
5.       Wear sunscreen! Our feet are one of the body parts we often forget to protect from the sun’s rays.  Be sure to slather it on from head to toe when you go out and about this summer.

Getting your nails ready for a hot date

The phone rings and you don’t recognise the number. You groan – not another fast talking telesales agent! But in the next moment your heart skips a beat – it’s the really nice guy that you met at quiz night. The friend of your friend – the one she gave your number to. He’s phoning to ask if you’d like to have a drink after work. You jump into action – a lunchtime dash to get a wash & blow dry and just enough time to pop in Origin Wellness Spa to shape and paint your nails a luscious deep red. Voila – you own the night!

It’s so easy to book your manicure or pedicure online – or buy a gift voucher for a friend

Select a treatment and click – and you’re booked.  Our fabulous range of treatments for hands and feet are at your fingertips. We have made it so easy for you to book a mani or pedi (or any Origin treatment) online via our website or by clicking on the BOOK button in our insta profile.  The same goes for buying a gift voucher to treat a friend or the special person in your life.  We look forward to seeing you soon!

Protect your hands and nails from wear and tear

Whenever you’re deep cleaning your home, or gardening, or doing anything that involves soaking your hands in hot sudsy water it is important to protect your hands and nails – and your manicure – by wearing suitable gloves.  Washing dishes in hot, soapy water without gloves can weaken your nails – while the wear and tear caused by cleaning or gardening then scrubbing up afterwards can damage your nails and leaving you with dry, flaky skin on your hands.  To promote extra soft skin, apply hand cream directly before you put on your protective gloves.
